Background of the Study

Wound care is a critical component of nursing practice, particularly in hospitals where patients with a variety of acute and chronic wounds require specialized care. Evidence-based practices (EBP) in wound care have been shown to enhance healing, reduce infection rates, and improve patient outcomes (Thomas et al., 2024). Nurses are the primary healthcare providers responsible for wound assessment, cleaning, dressing, and monitoring the healing process. Their knowledge and skills in implementing evidence-based wound care practices are essential to ensure optimal patient outcomes (Carter et al., 2023).

The advent of evidence-based guidelines has revolutionized wound management, promoting standardized care and reducing variability in treatment outcomes. These guidelines, developed from clinical research and expert consensus, emphasize the use of advanced wound care technologies, proper dressing techniques, and the management of underlying conditions such as diabetes or vascular insufficiency that may hinder wound healing (Jevon et al., 2023). Despite the availability of such guidelines, the adherence to evidence-based wound care practices remains inconsistent, particularly in resource-constrained settings such as Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, located in the southeastern region of Nigeria, serves as a regional hospital providing specialized care to a large number of patients with various types of wounds, including surgical wounds, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and traumatic wounds. Nurses in this facility are responsible for applying evidence-based wound care protocols, yet there is a lack of research on how well these practices are implemented and understood by the nursing staff. Exploring nurses’ knowledge and their ability to implement evidence-based practices in wound care at this hospital can identify gaps and inform targeted interventions to improve care quality.

Statement of the Problem

Although evidence-based practices in wound care have been widely adopted in many healthcare settings globally, there is limited research on the extent to which these practices are implemented by nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. Preliminary findings suggest that gaps in knowledge, lack of continuous training, and inconsistent access to necessary wound care materials may hinder the effective implementation of evidence-based practices. Understanding the factors influencing nurses' adherence to evidence-based wound care practices is crucial to improving patient outcomes and ensuring high standards of care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess nurses' knowledge of evidence-based practices in wound care at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.
  2. To evaluate the extent of implementation of evidence-based wound care practices by nurses at the hospital.
  3. To identify barriers and challenges that affect the implementation of evidence-based practices in wound care.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge among nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, regarding evidence-based practices in wound care?
  2. To what extent do nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, implement evidence-based wound care practices?
  3. What challenges hinder the implementation of evidence-based wound care practices at the hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, have adequate knowledge of evidence-based practices in wound care.
  2. Nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, effectively implement evidence-based wound care practices.
  3. There are significant barriers to the implementation of evidence-based practices in wound care at the hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on registered nurses working in the surgical, orthopedic, and wound care units of Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. The scope will include an evaluation of their knowledge and practices concerning evidence-based wound care. Limitations may include possible biases in self-reported data and the exclusion of other healthcare providers involved in wound care, such as physicians and wound care specialists.

Definitions of Terms

  • Evidence-Based Practices (EBP): Clinical practices and interventions that are based on the best available research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences.
  • Wound Care: The process of cleaning, treating, and dressing wounds to promote healing and prevent infection.
  • Implementation: The application and integration of evidence-based guidelines and protocols into everyday clinical practice.
  • Barriers: Factors such as inadequate training, resource limitations, or insufficient support that hinder the effective application of evidence-based practices.
